Employee Assistance Programs – the New standard - MateCheck

How We Partner

An Integrated Approach

Client Challenge:

A major large Australian corporation are dedicated to providing their employees with a holistic mental health and wellbeing program. Over the last few years they have invested heavily in a number of initiatives to support their mental health strategy. The company currently have an EAP, Physical health initiatives, and preventative educational programs including physical, psychosocial and job specific training. The corporation also work with various charitable and community groups providing specific mental health training workshops. The HR team are presented with the challenge that employee engagement with the initiatives remains low, and it is extremely difficult to provide leadership with a quantitative measurement of engagement with each initiative. As such, it has been challenging to provide ROI estimates on the investment, or statistics that suggest the programs are impactful.

The organisation is committed to best practice, but they are challenged with the lack of evidence available to target their investment, and provide the most impactful program for their people.

The MateCheck platform gives organisations the opportunity to coordinate and integrate all of their mental health and wellbeing initiatives in one easy to administer platform. The power of the collective

Client Challenge:

An industry association recognises the challenges associated with the inconsistency of employee assistance programs and workplace wellness support provided by its members to their staff. With a membership of SME organisations, there has been a mixed and inconsistent approach to supporting mental health and wellbeing in the workplace.

It has been challenging to provide a central and common strategy that can be easily accessed by member companies and offers the holistic and coordinated approach demanded by a larger organisation.

Building a culture of help-seeking and self-care

Client Challenge:

A resource company has invested consistently in providing resources and support services for their employees. Like the majority of Australian companies, the engagement with the EAP service is < 4%, and methods of measuring engagement and effectiveness of the program is limited to employee feedback surveys. Employee feedback has highlighted the reluctance of employees to reach out for help due to stigma associated with feelings of weakness, or concerns about their manager finding out about their need for support.

The organisation is committed to best practice, but they are challenged with the lack of evidence available to target their investment, and provide the most impactful program for their people.

MateCheck Solution:

In the modern world, our mobile phones are an extension of our personality and often our link with the outside world. Research suggests that we interact with our mobile phones more than 150 times a day. Our phones give us permission to research the unknown, and provide a way for us to engage with support. The MateCheck mobile APP for employees allows users to regularly check in with their wellbeing through the quick and easy five questions “Wellcheck”. Just like our physical body, our brain and mind need regular ‘exercise’ and wholesome activities to stay resilient. Checking in with ourselves on a regular basis helps us build awareness and insight so that we can act to optimise our wellbeing and better manage life’s bumps along the way. After all, mental health is everybody’s business, and the more of us that participate, the easier it is for the people that need support to get the help they need. Based on the Wellcheck responses, the individual is provided with a message of validation, and tailored resources to support self-care. In addition, if the user would like to have support – they can connect with the EAP provider/Counselling services and community support services at the click of a button. All done in the privacy of their mobile phone. MateCheck has seen engagement rise from less than 1% to 18% in similar client organisations.

The MateCheck solution bridges the gap for employees that need assistance with an easy to access, confidential and responsive solution.

A focus on prevention and early intervention

Client Challenge:

An organisation in the emergency services sector recognised that there are unique job specific stressors that impact their people’s mental health and wellbeing. Coupled with a low level of help-seeking behaviour and historical cultural norms that did not support high levels of engagement with workplace initiatives, the organisation aims to focus more on investment into preventative initiatives. The organisation is committed to investing in quality programs that meet the needs of their people, and that explore topics that resonate with their staff. Although it is possible to seek post training feedback from employees who attended in order to explore learning outcomes and engagement, it is more difficult to predict the real-time needs of the organisation to plan and prioritise the prevention program.

How does the organisation execute a program that meets the real-time needs of its employees, and measure the engagement and learning outcomes holistically and consistently?

MateCheck Solution:

The MateCheck platform encourages individuals to check in with their mental health and wellbeing by responding to the “Weekly WellCheck” questionnaire, and provides easy access to support resources and services. The client organisation has access to a real-time cumulative and de-identified data set that is presented in easy to analyse graphs on the client dashboard. Further detail is available by drilling down on each measure to gain valuable insights to the real-time “pulse” of the organisation’s wellbeing. The MateCheck psychologists work with the client organisation to interpret the data, and make recommendations for preventative training and education programs based on the trends seen in the data, and the indications for support. This allows the organisation to plan and provide preventative initiatives that resonate with their people. Utilising the MateCheck platform, the organisation can also measure and monitor engagement with individual initiatives and pre and post learning outcomes.

This provides essential objective measurement to report to leadership and track progress, thus facilitating continuous improvement and a constantly evolving mentally healthy workplace.
